social distancing

The COVID-19 virus can easily spread from sneezing, coughing and bacteria transferred by touch. The most effective way to prevent this process is through social distancing. This involves individuals purposely increasing the physical distance between themselves and others. To start, you must aim to keep 2 meters (6 feet) of space between yourself and others, regardless of the activity. By putting this into practice, it reduces the potential spread of COVID-19 and your chance of getting infected.

Examples

A more extreme precaution of social distancing is known as self-quarantine. While this method is the best way to reduce the spread of COVID-19, it is mainly tailored to those who have been exposed to the virus, or those more vulnerable. Health professionals recommend an isolation period to last 14 days in order to be effective. This time frame allows individuals to discover whether they might have any symptoms before potentially exposing others to the virus that you might have caught. If you have someone taking care of you during this period (bringing food, or having a conversation with you in your home), it is crucial they (and you) wear a mask to avoid further spread of the disease within the house / living space.

  • Stay at home, not allowing visitors

    • Maintain 2 meters distance (6 feet)
    • Stay in your own room (while this might not be possible when in smaller spaces, try not to share a bed with anyone or other living spaces)

  • Do not share towels, cups, plates, forks, spoons knives (try to use your own and wash them yourself)

  • It might not feel natural, but self quarantine includes NOT hugging or kissing your loved ones, NO handshakes with friends, coworkers or members of religious communities.
